What an Xbox gift card is

An Xbox gift card adds money to your Microsoft account balance. You can spend it on Xbox games and add-ons, in-game currency sold in the Microsoft Store, and subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass where they can be paid from the balance. The same Microsoft account works on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and xbox.com, so the balance is available wherever you sign in.

Country and region

Microsoft’s support pages state that gift cards and codes must be redeemed in the country or region where they were purchased, and that country must match the region of your Microsoft account. You can check it on account.microsoft.com under Your info → Country or region. Changing the account region is possible only under conditions (for example no active subscriptions), and the balance does not move to the new region, so it is safer to buy a card for the region you already use.

One balance for console and PC

Because the balance sits on your Microsoft account rather than on a console, it follows you to an Xbox, a Windows PC with the Xbox app, and the Microsoft Store on the web. Family groups let an organiser add money to a child’s account and set spending limits, which is a common reason parents choose gift cards. Keep in mind that the person who redeems the code owns the balance, so redeem it on the account that will actually use it.

How to redeem

1. Go to xbox.com/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com and sign in, or on the console open Store → Redeem.
2. Enter the 25-character code.
3. The value is added to your Microsoft account balance.
